Roof-to-wall joints
The roof-side flashing needs a useful connection under the wall-side protection. Repairs sometimes require opening adjacent shingles or wall material to restore the overlap.

Repair the joints where the roof meets walls, chimneys and penetrations. Start with a free inspection of the leaking connection.

Flashing is the formed metal and associated waterproofing that carries water across a roof interruption. At a sidewall, step-flashing pieces lap with shingle courses. At a chimney, counterflashing protects the top of that connection.
A pulled edge, open lap or deteriorated base leaves a water path below the covering. The repair needs the pieces to shed water together. Smearing sealant across a failed layered connection does not rebuild it.

For the work beneath a new covering, see roof replacement and its deck, flashing and ventilation scope.
The roof-side flashing needs a useful connection under the wall-side protection. Repairs sometimes require opening adjacent shingles or wall material to restore the overlap.
The front, sides and uphill side carry water differently. A cricket behind a broad chimney diverts runoff, while wall and masonry conditions can involve another trade.
Valley metal carries concentrated water; drip edge directs water at the eave and rake. A repair has to reconnect with underlayment and the roof covering.
Safe access, the length and shape of the joint, the material that must be opened and hidden deck damage determine the scope. A simple exposed piece is different from reconstructing a roof-to-wall transition.
We examine the covering and support around the failed detail so the new flashing has a sound place to connect. Masonry cracks or wall leaks may need separate building work.

Its condition, design and compatibility with the replacement roof determine that choice. A damaged, improperly layered or unsuitable piece should not be carried into the new roof simply because it is metal.
